Paralleling My Society To The Giver
There are many examples of text from our media that parallel the book, The Giver. Some of these examples are articles about Edward Snowden, U.S. Incarceration rates, Arizona’s ban on books, and songs such as Uprising by Muse. All of these texts have strong evidence of how the Giver society parallels our society.
In the Edward Snowden situation and articles parallel the Giver’s society in many ways. For example, both of the societies situations have surveillance. In the Snowden article it talks about how he was being watched/followed to see if he told secrets about the government that he knew. Then in the Giver they are being watched to see what their assignment will be. Another example is they both have whistleblowers. Snowden told the secrets he knew to the public. In the Giver Jonas tries to give memories he knew to his sister Lily and actually gives memories to baby Gabriel. The last is they both have secrets and lies. In Snowden he had secrets for the N.S.A and C.I.A. In the Giver, Jonas and the Giver have to keep secrets from the community. Overall, Edward Snowden does parallel the Giver in many ways.
In the article of Incarceration it reads that it parallels the Giver in many different ways. For example, in local and city jails the number of prisoners is like 2 million. This is technically saying they know how many people they have as prisoners. In the Giver they have to control how many people are in families and in the community. The next example is incarcerate is used to punish, deter, and rehabilitate. In the Giver they punish by releasing you, which is technically killing you. The last example is they allow for release. Incarceration allows you to apply for release. In the Giver they allow to apply for release but you will technically be killed. Overall, you read how both parallel each other in many different ways.
The Arizona’s ban on books article parallels the Giver in many ways. The first example is confiscate and continues to confiscate. This parallels the Giver because they confiscate all the bodies that are released and continue to do that. The next example is racism has nothing to do with color. This parallels the Giver because there wasn’t really racism because they couldn’t even see color. The last example is they give punishment. This parallels the Giver because they punish the people who don’t follow the rules. Overall, you read that books being banned, parallels the Giver.
A song that parallels the Giver is Uprising by Muse it parallels very well. For example, line 4 says “And hope we never see the truth around.” This parallels the Giver because they don’t even know the truth about their society and now that Jonas knows the truth he is more conscious about what he does. The next example is one line of the song says “You now your time is coming to an end.” This parallels the Giver because the old know they are going to die so they apply for release. The last example is one line says “ They will not control us.” This parallels the Giver because they are controlled to do what they are told.
